Choosing a Coffee Table for an Existing Sofa Set

A coffee table can be a statement piece that draws attention whenever somebody enters the living room. Some coffee tables are included in the sofa set. But if you are looking to find a coffee table that suits your existing sofa design and configuration, the article below can offer you some helpful points.

You have to consider

How much space is available in your living room along with the proportions of the existing sofa set. You have to measure the area between the sofa and other furniture in the room. You also have to consider circulation. There has to be space to move once the coffee table is added to the space. And when it comes to proportions, you need to visually balance that of the sofa set and the coffee table so that none of the elements are overwhelming the other. The functionality of the coffee table has to be considered as well. Maybe you are using  this in your large living area where you will need to entertain more guests. In this case, you will need a larger coffee table with sufficient area to keep drinks and snacks. You can also have a more minimal coffee table where there is still space but it is given as hidden storage compartments so that you can minimise the visual chaos. There are coffee tables that come with built-in shelves, drawers etc. so that storage needs can be accommodated.

There are different shapes and designs for coffee tables as well.

There are traditional options such as the square or rectangular tables. Then there are oval, round, octagonal and abstract coffee tables. You have to think about the shape of the existing sofa set and the room layout when choosing the coffee table shape. You can choose round or oval coffee tables for smaller spaces. These are also great when you are pairing one with a sectional sofa. This is a good way to create flow and it can prevent sharp corners. You can use square or rectangular coffee tables in a larger living room. Or if you have a sofa with sharp or straight lines, these shapes can be ideal. You can choose a coffee table that complements the style of the existing sofa set. A coffee table with clean lines and simple design elements can be used if you have a modern sofa set. Another option is to use a geometric coffee table. But if you have a traditional sofa set, you can choose a table with carved accents and ornate details.

You don’t always need to stick to a certain style when selecting a coffee table.

You can create visual interest by mixing up styles but this has to be done carefully so that the outcome is still cohesive. The materials and finishes for the coffee table has to be selected by considering the material and finish of the existing sofa set. If there are wooden accents in the sofa set, you can select a coffee table that has a wood finish. You can also mix materials to give a more eclectic look such as having a marble coffee table with a leather sofa set. Think about the height of the coffee table as this has to be proportional to the sofa. You need to be able to reach the coffee table from a seated position on the sofa and this means it has to be the same height as the seat cushions of the sofa.
